Bowen therapy - frequently asked questionsFrequently Asked Questions

How is it different from other therapies, such as Chiropractic, Osteopathy or physiotherapy?
Bowen differs from these therapies in several respects. Osteopaths and chiropractors will often use adjustments, or ‘cracks’ to realign the structure of the body treating the area of concern. With Bowen the therapist will take a case history, but the treatment does not set out to treat specific conditions or ailments. The body is treated as a whole without referral to named disease.
Is Bowen a form of massage?
No, Bowen works in a completely different way. The treatment can be performed through light clothing and no oils or prolonged pressure is used.
What can I expect during a Bowen treatment?
Treatments usually last for 45 minutes to 1 hour. I will take your full health history at the first appointment. This is time well spent, as it is often here that your real problems are identified. Many people usually become very relaxed right away, and even fall asleep during the treatment.
How Many treatments will I need to have?
Everyone responds differently so there is no guarantee. On average the number of treatments required is around three. Some problems need more treatments and some less. Many people find it beneficial to have top-up treatments thus preventing injury and maintaining a supple, healthy and relaxed body.
What can Bowen Therapy treat?
Although we do not treat specific conditions, there are many cases of certain conditions being helped with The Bowen Technique. Please note: The Bowen technique is not intended as a substitute for medical advice or treatment.  If in doubt please consult your own Doctor.
Is Bowen Therapy safe?
Yes. It is very gentle. There are no violent twists, cracks or crunches and it is practiced on everyone from new born babies to the very elderly with great success.
Can I mix Bowen with other complementary therapies?
No. It is important not to receive any other physical treatments for at least 7 days before or after a Bowen treatment. Mixing treatments can result in the body becoming overloaded with different information and may affect the outcome of the treatment.
How long is a treatment?
Treatments will often last from 45 minutes to an hour.
What should I wear for a Bowen treatment?

Bowen can be carried out through light clothing. Try to wear something lightweight and non-slippery. A cotton T-shirt and thin trousers are ideal. If you are wearing bulky items such as jumpers or coats you will be asked to remove these for the treatment.
Will it cost a lot of money?
No. It really won’t. A single treatment costs £40 for about one hour and a full course will last 2 or 3 treatments for the vast majority of patients.
